A Heartfelt Thank You to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The University of Hong Kong

As a former homeschool student in Hong Kong, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The University of Hong Kong (HKU).

In my heart, PolyU and HKU are truly international and forward-looking universities. They recognize that students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds and that there are different pathways to learning and achievement. Their openness to considering students with diverse educational experiences reflects a genuine commitment to educational diversity, equal opportunity, inclusion, and resilience in education.

For many homeschool students, the journey is not always easy. Homeschooling families in Hong Kong often face misunderstanding, social pressure, and uncertainty about future academic opportunities. At times, the path to university can seem unclear for students who choose a route different from the mainstream.

PolyU and HKU have given hope to many of us. By being open to applicants from non-traditional educational backgrounds, they demonstrate that potential, dedication, character, and a love of learning are qualities worth recognizing. To me, this reflects the spirit of an inclusive and internationally minded university.

I am deeply grateful for your vision and your willingness to recognize talent in its many forms. Your openness has encouraged many homeschool students to dream bigger and to believe that their educational journey is valued and respected.

Thank you, PolyU and HKU, for embracing diversity, supporting different pathways to learning, and giving hope to homeschool students and their families in Hong Kong.

With sincere appreciation,

Paris

Hong Kong Homeschool Student, You Did It!

polyu graduation certificate.jpeg

This is my daughter Paris's very first graduation certificate. As a homeschool student in Hong Kong, Paris did not receive primary or secondary school graduation certificates, which makes this achievement especially meaningful. Paris's first formal graduation certificate, awarded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University( ranked 50th in the QS Global Rankings) marks a deeply significant academic milestone. It symbolizes both Paris's personal journey and academic journey in Hong Kong, fulfilling societal expectations and opening a new chapter in her path of growth.

My Beloved Daughter Paris
I am so proud of you. Over the years, despite the many odds along your homeschooling journey and the negative voices against your homeschooling choice in Hong Kong, you have chosen to walk a life path that truly reflects your passion and your uniqueness. Through patience, determination, and perseverance, you have shown society that being different is neither wrong nor shameful. Your achievements demonstrate that uniqueness is a strength.

Congratulations on your success, and thank you for being courageously and authentically yourselves.

Paris's mum, Dr Lai

As I wrote this congratulations message, tears came to my eyes ( tears of joy). It was a very happy cry, filled with pride and gratitude...
